Gestational Diabetes
What is Gestational Diabetes?
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy in women who didn’t previously have diabetes. It occurs when hormonal changes in pregnancy affect how the body uses insulin, leading to high blood sugar (glucose) levels.
While gestational diabetes usually resolves after childbirth, it requires careful management during pregnancy to ensure the health of both mother and baby. Women who experience gestational diabetes are at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.

What Causes Gestational Diabetes?
During pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones that support the baby’s development. However, these hormones can also interfere with the mother’s insulin, leading to insulin resistance. When the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to overcome this resistance, blood sugar levels rise, resulting in gestational diabetes.
Risk factors include:
- Being overweight or obese before pregnancy
- A family history of diabetes
- Previous pregnancy with gestational diabetes
- Being older than 25 years
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Having given birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds (4 kg)
Symptoms of Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes often has no noticeable symptoms. However, in some cases, it may cause:
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination
- Fatigue
- Blurred vision
Because symptoms can be subtle, regular prenatal checkups and glucose screening tests are essential.
How is Gestational Diabetes Diagnosed?
Gestational diabetes is typically diagnosed between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy using:
Glucose Challenge Test (GCT):
A screening test where you drink a sugary solution, and your blood sugar is measured after one hour.Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT):
If the GCT results are elevated, the OGTT is performed. You’ll fast overnight, drink a sugary solution, and have your blood sugar levels checked at multiple intervals.
Managing Gestational Diabetes
Proper management is crucial to ensure a healthy pregnancy and reduce risks for both mother and baby. Key strategies include:
Healthy Eating
- Focus on balanced meals with whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, and non-starchy vegetables.
- Monitor carbohydrate intake to avoid spikes in blood sugar levels.
Regular Exercise
- Light to moderate exercise, like walking or prenatal yoga, can improve insulin sensitivity and help maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
Blood Sugar Monitoring
- You’ll need to check your blood sugar levels regularly using a glucose meter or continuous glucose monitor (CGM).
Medication or Insulin Therapy
- If diet and exercise alone aren’t enough to control blood sugar, your healthcare provider may prescribe insulin or oral medications.
Regular Prenatal Care
- Frequent checkups ensure both you and your baby are monitored closely throughout pregnancy.
Potential Risks of Gestational Diabetes
If not well managed, gestational diabetes can lead to complications such as:
For the Baby:
- Excessive birth weight (macrosomia), increasing the risk of a difficult delivery
- Preterm birth
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) after birth
- Higher risk of developing obesity and Type 2 diabetes later in life
For the Mother:
- Increased risk of high blood pressure and preeclampsia
- Higher likelihood of needing a cesarean delivery
- Increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in the future
Does Gestational Diabetes Go Away?
For most women, gestational diabetes resolves after childbirth as pregnancy hormones return to normal levels. However, it’s important to monitor your blood sugar postpartum and continue healthy habits, as gestational diabetes increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later.
Preventing Gestational Diabetes
While it’s not always possible to prevent gestational diabetes, you can lower your risk by:
- Maintaining a healthy weight before pregnancy
- Eating a balanced diet and avoiding excess sugar
- Staying physically active before and during pregnancy
